Students have been placed into Writing 101 or 102 by the registrar for one of the following reasons:
- their placement exam score indicated that you need a review of the skills in your assigned course;
- the registrar did not accept transfer credits from a previous institution;
- they are freshmen fulfilling the college composition requirements.
You may request exemption from your assigned composition course by delivering the following material to the Writing Program director:
Materials for Exemption from Composition 101
- A five to six-page writing sample showing fluency with diction, grammar, and syntax as well as proficiency with close-reading, analysis, and argumentation.
- A formal description (preferably from a course catalog or institutional website) of the course from which the writing sample comes.
- A transcript from your previous institution, including the grade you received for course equivalents of Composition 101.
Materials for Exemption from Composition 102
- An eight to ten-page writing sample showing fluency with diction, grammar, syntax, close-reading, analysis, argumentation, and research skills. Your writing sample should be a research paper that incorporates at least one primary text and two secondary texts.
- A formal description (preferably from a course catalog or institutional website) of the course from which the writing sample comes.
- A transcript from your previous institution, including the grade you received for course equivalents of Composition 102.
